Participating Boston Public Schools implement the following activities: - Students will take part in two Open Circle sessions each week. These interactive meetings include group discussions, role-playing, reading, and activities to teach important skills such as listening, sharing, cooperating, speaking up, calming down, and expressing anger appropriately. Throughout the school year, the Open Circle lessons and social-emotional vocabulary will be integrated into class lessons to build a consistent set of skills and concepts across grades.
- Grade level teachers will undergo training and receive comprehensive support throughout the school year to focus on the promotion of social-emotional skills in their classrooms.
- Administrators will develop strategies on how to best promote social-emotional skills in their communities through training and coaching support.
- Specialists and paraprofessionals will be trained in ways to incorporate social-emotional skills and vocabulary into their work.
- Parents and caregivers will learn Open Circle approaches to use at home through workshops at the participating schools and at Boston Public Schools’ Parent University. For a sample of welcome letter for families and Open Circle vocabulary please download this document.
- School-based teams will work to sustain social-emotional skills within the school and community.
