In an effort to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 and its impact on Boston's health care system and essential services, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced on Monday, December 14th that the City of Boston will return to a modified Phase Two, Step Two of the Reopening Massachusetts Plan on Wednesday, December 16th. Per the order, indoor fitness centers, health clubs, and recreational and athletic facilities, like the SEFC, must close through at least 1/27/21 weeks beginning on Wednesday, December 16th. As of Monday, August 17, the gym has resumed normal hours (see below).

We are following the state's Workplace Safety Standards, which means that members:

  • Cannot use showers, except to rinse off before using the pool
  • Must wear face coverings at all times, except where unsafe due to medical condition or disability
We continue to monitor Boston Public Health Commission, state, and CDC guidelines to ensure the safety of all guests and staff.

Membership Fees Related to COVID-19

When the South End Fitness Center reopens, we will process all membership requests connected to the COVID-19 temporary closing. We will not process any requests in advance of the gym's reopening.

Members can:
  1. Have their membership extended for the number of weeks that the gym was closed. For example: The gym is closed for 3 weeks. Your membership expires on May 31. With this option, we would extend your membership until June 21.

  2. Request a reimbursement for the number of weeks that the gym was closed

  3. Keep your membership as is


South End Fitness Center (SEFC) is Boston's gym, run by the BPHC.

All memberships include use of the following:

  • Basketball court
  • Strength training equipment
  • Cardio equipment
  • Lap pool
  • Exercise studio & group fitness classes
  • Locker room with daily use lockers & showers
  • 2 hours of validated, free parking in the Northampton Square garage

New members receive a free one-hour fitness orientation with our Fitness Specialist, to evaluate your fitness goals, discuss proper training techniques and equipment usage, and develop a personalized fitness program. 


Regular Hours:
Monday – Thursday: 6:00am–9:30pm
Friday: 6:00am–8:00pm
Saturday: 8:00am–6:00pm
Sunday: 8:00am–3:00pm

Pool Hours
All 6 lanes are available except for the following times, when lanes will be limited:
Monday: 6:30-8:30pm
Tuesday: 7:00-8:00pm
Wednesday: 5:00-8:30pm
Saturday: 9:30-11:00am

Locker rooms close 15 minutes prior to closing.
Pool closes 30 minutes prior to closing​.

All SEFC members get 2 hours of free parking in the Northampton Street garage, which is located at 35 Northampton Street, just around the corner from the SEFC address. Once you park your car, entr the lobby through the black door located at the Albany Street end of the garage and take the elevator to the 4th floor
Walking/public transportationThe SEFC is conveniently located on the following MBTA bus routes: 1, 8, 10, 47, CT3​

Those with a SEFC membership may open the door at 785 Albany Street with their swipe card. Insert card in black box (blue side facing left), and slide it downward.

If the ramp gate is down, walk to Northampton Street (to your left) and enter through the 35 Northampton Street garage ramp. Once inside, walk to your right through the garage to the black door and take the elevator to the 4th floor.

*SEFC is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Patriots' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.  ​
