Pandemic influenza refers to a worldwide outbreak of flu and is caused by a new type of flu virus. This type of outbreak can travel quickly because most people would not have immunity to a new virus and it can spread easily from person to person. This could cause disruption of many services since many people will be ill at the same time. Currently, the novel H1N1 influenza virus is considered a pandemic.
The Commission works together with city, state, and federal authorities to monitor the flu virus, prevent the spread of flu, and to develop emergency preparedness plans should a pandemic occur.
