 HEPATITIS

Hepatitis is inflammation or swelling of the liver. The liver helps the body digest food, remove toxins, and store energy. The liver can become inflamed for several reasons, including autoimmune disease, toxic chemical excess, or viruses.

Several viruses, including hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, cause acute or short-term inflammation of the liver. In some cases hepatitis B, C, and D can also cause chronic hepatitis, in which the infection is prolonged or, in some cases, lifelong.
