 EMERGENCY SHELTER



The Boston Public Health Commission’s Homeless Services Bureau operates two emergency shelters. 

The Long Island Shelter is a 435 bed unit located on Long Island in Boston Harbor. The Woods Mullen Shelter is a 190 bed unit located on Massachusetts Ave. in Boston’s South End. Both shelters operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and offer a warm bed and meals, as well as access to a variety of services including medical and mental health, substance abuse counseling and referrals, case management and emergency clothing.

LONG ISLAND SHELTER

Long Island Shelter is an emergency shelter located on Long Island in Boston Harbor. Long Island Shelter provides a variety of services designed to assist shelter guests' move beyond the shelter. 

There are 387 beds available for adults 18 and over.  Transportation is provided from our intake site at 784 Rear Massachusetts Avenue (Woods Mullen Shelter) from 3:00pm to 10:00pm daily. MBTA buses transport guests from Long Island Shelter back to Boston every morning.

Services Provided:

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals are served to guests in our cafeteria.
  • Toiletries: Guests are provided with soap, toothpaste, shaving cream, and shampoo.
  • Emergency Clothing: Guests are given access to emergency clothing assistance.
  • Lockers: Guests may access rental lockers for personal belongings or medications.
  • Medical Health Care: Guests have access to the clinic operated by Boston’s Health Care for the Homeless.
  • Mental Health: Mental Health services are available on a walk-in basis for anyone who feels they need help or counseling.
  • Individual Case Management: Guests are encouraged to meet with the Case Management Department for referrals to both internal and external job training, education and substance abuse services.

WOODS MULLEN SHELTER

Woods Mullen Shelter is an emergency shelter located at the corner of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue, near the Boston Medical Center. Woods Mullen Shelter provides food, emergency clothing, health care and case management services for anyone who is in need. Shelter guests are welcome to stay as long as is needed, and are strongly encouraged to take advantage of a wide range of services and programs designed to help transition back to the community.

  • Emergency clothing assistance  
  • Access to lockers to store belongings        
  • Meals and clean beds
  • Mail services  
  • Health Care services and referrals
  • Substance Abuse assessment, and referrals
  • Mental Health assessment, services and referral
  • Individual case management
  • Housing placement assistance
  •  Work Experience Program
  • A.A. and N.A. twelve step meetings  

Woods Mullen Shelter has190 beds available for adults 18 and over (124 beds for men and 66 for women). Tickets are given out on a first come first serve basis beginning at 4:00pm.
