 About the Boston MRC

What is the Boston MRC?
The Boston MRC is a group of volunteers who are ready to respond should there be a public health emergency in Boston.  In an emergency, volunteers perform a wide range of tasks aimed at keeping the city safe and healthy.

Who volunteers for the Boston MRC?
Our volunteers are everyday people who live, work or go to school in the City of Boston.  You don’t need to have a medical background to volunteer with the Boston MRC.  Everyone has an important skill to offer, and we are always looking for:

  • Multilingual volunteers
  • Community leaders
  • Those experienced with special needs populations
  • Doctors, nurses, physician's assistants, EMTs and other health professionals
  • Everyday citizens with a desire to help during an emergency

Why should I sign up?

  • If you think you would be interested in helping your community in a time of emergency, the time to sign up is now. We can't call on you to help if we don't know who you are!
  • We offer free continuing education classes for nurses, physicians, EMTs and paramedics!
  • You will have access to a great selection of courses and seminars offered for free by the DelValle Institute for Emergency Preparedness
  • You can help in large events around the city of Boston, such as the Boston Marathon and seasonal flu Clinics.

Do I need special training to volunteer?
Because our volunteers have such a diverse group of backgrounds, we do not require any training prior to signing up. After you sign up, we require all volunteers to attend Orientation to learn what it means to be a volunteer, how to respond in an emergency and how to be better prepared for emergencies.

What kind of time commitment is involved with volunteering?
The only required time commitment is a 1.5 hour Orientation. Beyond that, you are invited to register for a wide variety of quality courses. Although Boston MRC volunteers could be called at any time for an emergency, they always have the choice to respond or not.
