Over the years that Safe Shops has been offering trainings, certain shops have risen to the top of environmental leadership and inquired about the availability of safer alternatives to toxic chemicals.  Others have sought to buy newer equipment that focuses on worker safety and pollution prevention. 

It is important that the Safe Shops Project offers a variety of ways that shops can improve neighborhood conditions and worker health.  In order to provide useful materials, Safe Shops staff had to do homework and rely on some wonderful and already existing educational tools. 

Many times staff has supplied shop owners and workers with fact sheets from the EPA Design For Environment Program or watched videos with them on a lap top from the California Department of Toxics Substances Control.  There are many excellent existing resources that are outlined in the table below.

The Safe Shops Tool Box	Created by the BPHC Safe Shops Project.  Useful pollution prevention guide to leave with shops.  It outlines compliance requirements and resources.
Auto Shop Pollution Prevention Video: Protecting Your Environment, Your Employees, and Your Business	Created by the BPHC Environmental Hazards Office.  This 20 minute video is projected on the wall during every Safe Shops Tailgate Training.
US EPA Design for the Environment Auto Refinishing Best Practices Kit	Very useful for one on one’s with auto shop owners and workers to discuss best practices.  The vendor contacts are especially useful.
Crash Course for Compliance and Pollution Prevention	A good work book and tool box to reference for questions and ideas on pollution prevention and compliance in the auto body industry.
Auto Repair and Fleet Maintenance Pollution Prevention	Downloadable fact sheets and videos on pollution prevention in the auto repair industry.  We use their tools quite a bit.
CA Department of Toxic Substances Control Auto Body and Paint Shop Project fact sheets and videos	Very well done videos on paint waste reduction and sanding waste management and paint gun cleaning.  We often use the videos with shop owners.
CA Department of Toxic Substances Control Vehicle Service and Repair fact sheets and videos	Very well done videos and fact sheets on aqueous brake and parts cleaner, spill prevention and oil spill clean up with a hydrophobic mop, and other pollution prevention techniques.  The aqueous brake cleaner video has sold shop owners on the idea of eliminating perchloroethylene containing brake cleaner.  The videos are extremely useful for doing one on one pollution prevention visits with shop owners.
