Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) CPPW program has awarded The Boston Public Health Commission $12.5 million over two years through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (the “economic stimulus” bill) to implement aggressive, high-impact interventions addressing nutrition, physical activity and tobacco use. These initiatives will lead to policy, systems, and environmental changes that will reduce obesity and tobacco use and exposure in the City of Boston.

Boston’s CPPW initiative will be led by a high-level leadership team, chaired by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, whose members represent Boston’s key public and private sectors. To view the leadership team  click here

  • The CPPW Obesity Prevention project funded at $ 6.4 million will: (1) Decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages through counter-advertising and policy change. (2) Increase active transit through a new bike share program and implementation of complete streets policies. (3) Improve neighborhood-based food production and distribution through environmental changes for additional community/backyard gardening and land use policies. (4) Enhance integration of high quality and frequent physical activity and education into the school day.

  • The CPPW Tobacco Prevention & Control project funded at $ 6.1 million will: (1) Reduce the demand fro tobacco products through youth and community-driven awareness campaigns designed to challenge tobacco industry tactics of marketing to urban communities of color. (2) Enact regulatory and other policy changes which limit tobacco access, influence price and increase the number of smoke-free environments. (3) Increase structural capacity to connect Boston residents to and deliver tailored tobacco cessation services. (4) Create 1,000 smoke free residences in Boston.
