Promoting Breast Health

The BPHC is very active in promoting breast cancer awareness and sincerely involved in risk reduction, especially among African Americans and Latinas. We conduct breast health workshops in churches, schools, shelters and other community settings. Using life-like breast models, the breast health program educates women about breast self-exam, dense breast tissue, cancerous lumps or non-malignant fibroids. Often done in a home setting, our health demonstrations provide a safe and supportive setting for women to talk about strategies to detect breast cancer at an early stage and learn where to seek help if necessary. We also provide materials at health fairs or larger forums. While our focus is breast health, we give attention to family, social and nutritional issues affecting women’s health.

Our outreach workers and educators are dedicated to bringing breast health awareness to teenagers and young women of color throughout the city of Boston. Our message is that young women should know their bodies well enough to know when something feels or looks out of the ordinary. We refer women to Boston area health centers and are often involved in follow-up recommendations. Free breast cancer screenings, called mammograms are available on a yearly basis through Boston’s Mammography Van.

Mammography Van

Boston’s Mammography Van seeks to reduce breast cancer morbidity and mortality, improve access to quality care, and address health care disparities for women of color in the City of Boston. Operated by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission, neighborhood health centers and community groups, Boston’s Mammography Van provides mammography screening and breast health education to all women, regardless of ability to pay, with a priority on serving uninsured and underinsured women right in their neighborhood.

Mammography Screenings

Mammography screenings are performed by skilled, licensed technologists and the films are interpreted by Board-certified radiologists from Dana-Farber Cancer institute—clinicians with extensive experience dedicated to mammography.

Who can use this service

The priority populations served are low-income, elderly, uninsured and medically underserved women who are least likely to get a mammogram otherwise. When diagnosed with breast cancer they are often diagnosed at later stages of the disease and therefore experience higher rates of breast cancer morbidity and mortality.

Between May 2002 and December 2007, the van provided more than 18,000 mammograms to more than 10,000 individual women in the City of Boston. For more information call 617-632-1974 or view the Mamography Van schedule. All women, regardless of ability to pay, are welcome to get their mammogram on the van. Pre-registration required, medical eligibility will be checked, all forms of insurance accepted.
