 CHEC TRAINING PROGRAMS

Meeting People Where They Are...

THE COMPREHENSIVE OUTREACH EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

A fourteen-session *training that provides an introduction to a public health framework for understanding health issues affecting multicultural neighborhoods.  (54.5 hours)

To obtain the certificate, you must complete the following sessions:

 CORE SESSIONS
Three-to-five-hour sessions focusing on core outreach skills, competencies and strategies needed for community outreach and health education practice.

  • Introduction to COEC/ Assessment Techniques
  • Leadership Skills
  • Outreach Education I & II
  • Cross-Cultural Communication
  • Community Organizing
  • Public Health

Then you must take at least seven health modules from the following list:

HEALTH MODULES SESSIONS
Three-to-five-hour sessions focusing on health facts and local referral resources so that you can provide health information and referrals on a broad range of issues to your communities (new modules will be added periodically).

  • Emergency Preparedness/CPR (required class for Certificate Program completion)
  • Adolescent Health
  • Asthma
  • Breast Cancer
  • Childhood Health
  • Chronic Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Domestic Violence
  • Elder Health
  • Family Planning
  • Healthy Eating

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections)

  • Women’s Health

Outreach Educators may enroll in health modules without enrolling in the Certificate Program.

*Local colleges awarding three college credits upon completion of Certificate: Bunker Hill Community College, MassBay Community College, Cambridge College, Lesley College, Springfield College, UMASS Boston.

ADVANCED COEC
An intensive 13-session training program for outreach educators/community health workers to upgrade their skills to advance professionally.  The training builds on CHWs’ skills and knowledge for supporting and working with clients as well as communicating effectively with other workers and agency professionals regarding client and community needs and concerns. 

Participants will strengthen their communication skills in making effective presentations and writing clear reports on clients, outreach and health education activities and related projects. (55 hours)

Prerequisite: Completion of COEC Program (Level 1).

  • Presentation Tips and Techniques
  • Professional Writing Skills

ADVANCED HEALTH MODULES
One-day sessions that give Outreach Educators more in-depth information and practice on selected topics.  Prerequisite: Basic health module on the selected topic.

  • Advanced Domestic Violence
  • Advanced Substance Abuse
  • Advanced HIV/AIDS

COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT (CHEP)
This three-part workshop series assists community-based organizations and groups plan, evaluate and write grant proposals for community health education programs.

Program Planning:
Helps assess health education needs in your community,
establish priorities and acquire skills for developing relevant behavioral change objectives and educational interventions related to the populations you serve.

Preparing Evaluation Plans:
Introduces a range of evaluation techniques and gives guidelines on how best to use evaluators for your programs.

Grant Writing:
Gives an overview of the elements of a grant proposal and helps match your program ideas with a funding source.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT WORKSHOPS
These workshops assist outreach educators in continuing to improve their own level of skill and ability for professional growth and development.

 Supervisory Skills:
A two-day workshop that addresses issues specific to the supervision of outreach education programs.

Advanced Supervisory Forum:
An one-day workshop that gives supervisors of Outreach Educators  practice in addressing performance, evaluation and retention issues.    Prerequisite:  Supervisory Skills (Level 1)

Stress Management:
A one-day workshop that helps participants identify stressors and practice healthy coping mechanisms to overcome them.

SKILLS BUILDING WORKSHOPS
Three-hour workshops to further build skills necessary to resolve issues that outreach educators work with every day

  • Health Education Models for Behavioral Change 
  • Motivational Interviewing                                                                                                

TOPICAL HEALTH SEMINARS

Addictions Seminar:
A four-session seminar focused on understanding the types and process of addiction and its impact on the mind, body and spirit; assessing the stages of addiction; education/prevention strategies; treatment alternatives; stages of recovery; and relapse prevention.

Violence Prevention Seminar:
A three-session seminar which addresses the impact of violence on women, children, and youth  by identifying patterns of behavior, violence-prevention strategies and referral information.

COMMUNICATION METHODS WORKSHOPS

Train the Trainer:
This three-session workshop series helps participants to strengthen new training and facilitation skills based on an adult learner education model. You will learn creative, successful methods for conducting training workshops from icebreakers to managing group dynamics

Developing Health Education Materials:
This two-session, hands-on workshop series provides guidance in message development, design and field testing in the production of easy-to-read, culturally appropriate health education materials.

 Curriculum Design:
This two-part workshop series introduces participants to a participatory method for developing a health education curriculum using learners’ experiences to guide the content of the curriculum.
