 SCHOOL BASED HEALTH (Public, Private & Parochial)

School Based Health Centers (Public School)

The Boston Public Health Commission - in collaboration with the Boston Public Schools and Boston Medical Center - operates eight school based health centers in Boston Public Schools.

Students are encourage to "walk right in" to the health center for one of our many on-site health services, including:

  • Screening services
  • Injury treatment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Mental health counseling
  • Dental screening
  • Sports physicals
  • Health insurance enrollment
  • Health information and brochures

Our Staff
Our health team includes a medical director, a physician assistant or nurse practitioner, and a health coordinator. Providers are available during the school day, minimizing time lost by students from school.

School Health (Parochial, Private & Charter)

Elementary School Program

The Boston Public Health Commission provides public health nursing services to elementary private and parochial schools in Boston. There are 36 of these schools and they are located throughout Boston neighborhoods and serve 11,500 children between the ages of 4 and 14 years. There are 750 faculty and staff employed by these schools.

Public health nurses provide a unique package of services to each school which consists of: health assessments (including vision, hearing and scoliosis screening and immunization status); assessment of each students insurance status and referral as needed; identification of a primary care provider for each student health education programs for students and faculty counseling referrals as needed

Topics for health education include: AIDS, substance abuse, violence prevention, growth and development, nutrition and related eating disorders, conflict management, smoking prevention and cessation programs and sexual abuse issues. Universal Precaution Workshops are mandated for all faculty and staff each year.

Enhanced health services for high schools

The Enhanced School Health Services Project provides public health nursing services to 7 parochial high schools and 11 charter schools located throughout Boston. Funding for this project is provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Boston Public Schools.

Public Health Nursing services include:

health assessments (including vision, hearing and scoliosis screening and immunization status); assessment of each students insurance status and referral as needed; identification of a primary care provider for each student.

In addition coordination services are provided to school nurses employed by these schools. Continuing education workshops are provided as well as technical support.
