About Public Health Preparedness
The Public Health Preparedness (PHP) office is funded by the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
PHP is charged with coordinating Boston Public Health Commission activities around planning, surveillance,
risk communications, and education and training.
PHP works with hospitals, community health centers, Emergency Medical Services,
state and local public health departments, and public safety partners to plan
responses to a variety of emergencies ranging from an attack with weapons of
mass destruction to a natural disaster.
Through collaboration with other divisions within the Commission such as Communicable
Disease Control, Environmental Health, the DelValle Institute for Emergency
Preparedness, and Emergency Medical Services, the Office of Public Health Preparedness
facilitates emergency planning for key public health and health care organizations
in the city who would be part of response during a disaster.
Working together with the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals, PHP is developing
a regional plan that accommodates the surge of people needing medical care during
an event. In addition, planning and training with Community Health Centers regarding
response during an emergency is on-going.
