MassHealth

MassHealth provides the most benefits for uninsured children. In Massachusetts, MassHealth eligibility requirements have been expanded to cover more children.

How do I know if my child is eligible for MassHealth?
Your child can receive benefits from MassHealth if he or she is: age 18 or younger, and your family’s income is 200 percent of the poverty level or lower (see income chart ).

What if I make more money than the MassHealth income limit?
If your child is disabled and your income is more than the MassHealth limit, your child can be covered by MassHealth / CommonHealth.

If your child is not disabled and your income is more than the MassHealth limit, your child may be covered by the Children’s Medical Security Plan (CMSP) .

Can immigrants get MassHealth?
Yes. Children who are citizens, refugees, asylees, PRUCOL (persons residing under color of law) or legal permanent residents can get MassHealth benefits. Undocumented children can get limited emergency benefits and CMSP. All children who receive Mass-Health must live in Massachusetts.

What if I already have health insurance, but my income is under the MassHealth limit? Should I still apply for MassHealth?
Yes. Depending on your income, MassHealth can help you pay your premiums for your children or supplement your children’s coverage (see Premium Assistance Programs ).

What does MassHealth cover?
MassHealth covers a wide range of services, including hospital and doctors’ visits, dentists’ visits, lab services, prescription drugs, medical equipment, medically necessary transportation, home nursing care, and mental health and substance abuse services.

How do I enroll my child in MassHealth?
You can get a Medical Benefit Request Form (MBR) and help filling out the form at one of the MassHealth enrollment sites or you can obtain an MBR form by calling (888) 665-9993. When you get the form, fill it out completely. Send the form, with proof of your family’s income (pay stubs or tax returns) and proof of your child’s immigration status (if not a U.S. citizen), to the MassHealth address listed on the form.
