Children’s Medical Security Plan (CMSP)
If your child is not eligible for MassHealth or CommonHealth, he or she
may be covered by the Children’s Medical Security Plan. The CMSP is a Massachusetts
program that is paid for by a special tax on cigarettes. Any uninsured child
up to age 19 may be eligible for the CMSP.
Are there any income restrictions for the CMSP?
No. But families with higher incomes may have to pay a monthly, per child
premium and higher co-payments.
Are immigrants eligible for the CMSP?
Yes. Any child regardless of immigrant status, who is 18 or younger is eligible
for the CMSP. All children must live in Massachusetts.
What does the CMSP cover?
The CMSP covers routine well-child checkups, immunizations, dental services
and smoking prevention materials with no co-payment.
The CMSP provides limited coverage for the following services with a small
co-payment of $1 to $5 (depending on family size and income): emergency doctor
visits, hearing tests, lab tests, Xrays and other diagnostic tests, emergency
care, specialty consultations, outpatient mental health and substance abuse
services, durable medical equipment, prescription drugs.
How do I enroll my child in the CMSP?
You can enroll in the CMSP by filling out the Medical Benefits Form, the
same form used to apply for MassHealth
. (If you’ve already applied for MassHealth and are not eligible, you will
automatically be referred to the CMSP). You will need to provide proof of
income.
