WHAT WE DO

The Office of Policy and Planning works to strengthen public policies that improve the health of Boston residents, particularly the most vulnerable. The office does this through:

  • Building partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Convening standing and ad-hoc working groups within the Commission
  • Coordinating, Disseminating, and Monitoring intergovernmental, interagency, community-based, and internal policy priorities
  • Integrating anti-racist principles throughout Commission programs, policies, and practices
  • Communicating updates and alerts e.g. state legislation, actions, etc.
  • Representing and Promoting the Commission among city, state, federal agencies and legislators, community coalitions, and organizations
  • Developing guidelines, tools, curricula, etc. responsive to the priorities of the Commission and community partners

2009 and 2010 HEALTH OF BOSTON COMMUNITY MEETINGS

Each year, BPHC holds meetings with the community to share health data from our Health of Boston report and to listen to residents’ concerns about their health. In the falls of 2009 and 2010, BPHC held four community meetings each year in collaboration with the Boston Alliance for Community Health (BACH) and four of its neighborhood health coalitions.

Over 500 Boston residents, providers, and policymakers participated in the meetings. The meetings also highlighted community assets and exposed participants to the problem of racial and ethnic health inequities and the social factors contributing to these unjust differences in health status and health outcomes. The meetings were successful in engaging residents and other stakeholders in dialogue, based on informative data presentations from BPHC’s Health of Boston report as well as data from neighborhood and national sources. Following the presentations, community members actively participated in small-group conversations that quickly moved from voicing concerns to finding possible solutions. The meetings also contributed to BPHC efforts to eliminate health inequities, encourage and support policy change and build and expand strategic community partnerships.

BPHC Community Meeting Long-Term Goals

1.  To increase city-wide awareness of the social determinants of health and build capacity to advance health equity

2. To align and help achieve both BPHC  and community health outcome goals

3. To build effective partnership as an ongoing strategy to engage the community and create mechanisms for mutual accountability to improve health outcomes

IMPROVING PRIMARY CARE ACCESS IN BOSTON

In February 2008, Mayor Menino, with Dr. Paula Johnson, the Chairperson of the BPHC Board, convened a summit to address primary care access in Boston.  The participants at the summit were asked to assess the current state of primary care in Boston, identify challenges and make recommendations to improve access for Boston residents. Work groups were formed to concentrate on three areas -- the health care system, workforce development and financing.  The report, published in July 2008, contains recommendations and suggested next steps to improve access to primary care in the city of Boston.

In response to the report, Mayor Menino identified areas for immediate action and convened the Mayor’s Primary Care Task Force. The Task Force and its working groups studied the areas for action in light of substantial changes at the state level, guided additional activities, and made a number of recommendations to address primary care in the City of Boston. This report describes the progress and outlines recommended next steps to advance the goals laid out by the Task Force.
