 Strategic Alliance for Health

Overview

The Strategic Alliance for Health (SAH) is a 4-year initiative through the Boston Public Health Commission, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of SAH is to create healthier communities through sustainable, innovative, evidence and practice-based community health promotion and chronic disease prevention programs that promote policy, systems, and environmental change.

SAH will focus on building local capacity in several areas, including:

–  Promote physical activity and nutrition;

–  Build capacity for communities to be able to institute systems, environmental, organizational and policy changes related to these health risk factors;

–  Help eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities; and

–  Reduce complications from and incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

SAH objectives will be accomplished by utilizing policy, systems, and environmental change (PSE) strategies.

Policies: Voluntary or mandatory policies that promote healthier options and disincentivize (or ban) unhealthy options

Systems: Underlying mechanisms and coordination efforts

Environment: Aspects of the physical environment that affect behavior

Program Structure

SAH work will be focused in 2 “sectors” – the community and schools. Ongoing initiatives for the community sector in the first year include sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), healthier options in retail stores, a built environment initiative, and work with after-school programs. For the schools sector, a strategic planning process throughout year 1 will help determine future implementation strategies. Future efforts will also be directed towards mentoring other communities.
