Healthy Food Access is a grant by the Commission's Office of Health Equity and Social Justice at the Commission to provide funding to community organizations to address the related causal factors in the ‘food environment’ that are the major determinants of obesity, and chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease, and lack of food security among low-income residents. more>>

Promoting Walking and Walkability |

The NeighborWalk program provides technical assistance to community based organizations to organize residents to walk in their neighborhoods. Participating walkers receive a pedometer (step counter), tee shirt, and water bottle. more>>

Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition (We Can) is a national education program developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help prevent overweight and obesity among youth ages 8-13. We Can! Provides community-based classes with a parent take-home handbook and related materials that focus on behavior changes to encourage healthy eating and beverage consumption, increase physical activity, and reduce sedentary time. more>>

Wellness in Child Care is a program to train Boston childcare providers on strategies to promote healthy eating and physical activity for preschool-age children. The project utilizes the University of North Carolina, Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) tool, and educational materials. The initial focus is on family day care programs serving children in Boston’s low-income neighborhoods. more>>

The Corner Store Initiative is a pilot program to encourage Boston middle school students to drink healthier beverages, especially when they buy them at nearby convenience stores. more>>

The Chef Initiative is a pilot program to improve nutritional quality, increase the fruit, vegetable, and fiber content of meals, and decrease processed foods in Boston Public Schools. Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced the launch of the program in September 2007. More information coming soon!

Wellness Policy. Boston Public Schools instituted a policy requiring that all schools include an assessment and plan for implementing school-based improvements in physical activity, nutrition education, and healthy eating in their Whole School Improvement Plans. More information coming soon!
