BOSTON - October 19 to 25, 2008 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Let's Wipe Out Lead Poisoning, Renovate Right!”
Homeowners who renovate their properties may disturb or release harmful lead dust that can be especially dangerous for children less than six years of age. Lead poisoning can damage the brain, kidneys, and nervous system. Even low levels can slow a child's development and cause learning and behavior problems.
The Boston Public Health Commission's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and Department of Neighborhood Development Lead Safe Boston will sponsor lead awareness events on October 22, 2008 at the Curtis Hall Community Center, 20 South Street, Jamaica Plain, and on October 29, 2008 at the Roslindale Public Library, 4238 Washington Street, Roslindale.
From 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. each night, homeowners can learn about free moderate risk deleading training and certification for lead hazard control, apply for deleading financial assistance with Lead Safe Boston, and get assistance to get your drinking water tested by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. For more information, contact the Commission's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at 617- 534-5966.
National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
