Duties

Conducts inspections and manages cases according to regulations and protocols established by federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
Conducts indoor and outdoor field investigations by interview, sample collection, and environmental testing.
Documents case histories in program database(s) and prepares reports.
Conducts assessments of health hazards and recommends courses of action. 
Conducts toxicological evaluations and health risk assessments of exposure to environmental pollutants.
Works as a member of a team and participates in case studies.
Investigates public complaints and takes necessary actions for remediation. 
Responds to environmental emergencies during normal hours and when on emergency on-call status. 
Communicates effectively with local, state, and federal agencies as well as the general public regarding environmental health and toxic chemicals. 
Coordinates activities with other government agencies, commissions, and authorities.
Reviews and analyzes reports generated by environmental consultants.
Maintains necessary training, licensing, and certification.
Supports permitting and enforcement activities for programs including asbestos, lead, body art, tanning facilities, trans fat, ice rinks, solid waste, schools, occupational settings and other areas as necessary.
Conducts community education.
Counsels and mediates landlords, tenants, contractors, and the general public.
Researches corporate ownership, real estate ownership, health hazards and related laws and regulations. Calibrates & maintains field monitoring/sampling instruments.
Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

BA/BS required, except that certain inspectional certifications or licenses and 10 or more years of related experience, may be substituted for the degree.
Maintenance of a valid MA drivers license and a legally operable automobile; familiarity with Boston neighborhoods; multilingual skills preferred; must obtain required licenses within one month of hire and maintain licensure; acquisition and maintenance of any other training and certification that may become required for the performance of job duties.
Previous experience in counseling, inspection and hazard abatement is preferred. Knowledge of Massachusetts Sanitary Code and of lead health inspection laws, codes and regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
This position requires direct client/patient contact and as a result of such direct contact, certain immunizations will be recommended and/or required prior to commencement of employment duties.
A Criminal Offenders Records Information request must be completed for this position.  However, a record is not an automatic bar to employment but is reviewed in relation to the job applied for.
Boston residency required, or willingness to relocate to Boston.
